Flying Scotsman was involved in a “slow speed” crash with another heritage train hours before visitors were due to board it. The crash happened at Aviemore Railway Station, in the Cairngorms, Scottish Highlands, at 7.10pm on Friday.
A County Durham railway station has been found to be older than first thought and is now believed to be the world’s oldest railway station, new research has discovered.
The organisers of the Cramlington Train Wreckers project have been given exclusive access to a 30-minute 1969 BBC film of interviews with the surviving four Northumberland miners who were imprisoned after accidentally derailing the Flying Scotsman during the 1926 General Strike.
It is now over 200 years since the world’s first steam railway locomotive made its maiden voyage along a primitive plateway in South Wales – in 1804 Richard Trevithick’s high-pressure steam locomotive successfully hauled a loaded train a distance of nine miles at an average speed of two mph.
