DERBY businessman Don Amott said he wants to save the city council’s closed Markeaton Park Light Railway.
The 15in gauge line, which was first opened in 1989 and was extended to its present length of nearly a mile in 1996, is currently being dismantled after the previous tenant, John Bull, said the city council, which owns the site, had let the engine shed, a former Second World War military building, fall into too bad a state of disrepair.
The council has appealed for enthusiasts to step in and take over the line, which runs next to what remains of Markeaton village. The operator leases the railway from the council but under the agreement, the engine shed was the responsibility of the local authority.
