VISITORS to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway’s October 12-14 wartime weekend will be able to see inside a Victorian restaurant car that has not carried passengers for 91 years.
An audio-visual presentation – From Steam, Speed and Sumptuous Dining to Tracks into the Trenches – will tell the story of East Coast Joint Stock third class dining car No. 189, which last carried passengers in 1927, after which the carriage body was sold to a Holme-on-Spalding-Moor pig farmer.
There it languished for some 60 years, before a preservationist secured it in the 1980s, mounting it on an old underframe recovered from a burned-out carriage. Since 2010, the LNER Coach Association has owned it and it has been undergoing an extensive restoration, which is now complete.
