I WAS sad to read of the passing of Ray Towell in issue 214.

I and my retired railway colleagues first met Ray in September 2004 at the STEAM museum in Swindon.

He had brought No. 3440 City of Truro here for us to operate in steam giving brakevan rides.He was a very nice and friendly chap who gave us full access to No. 3440 in steam, driving and firing.
He placed myself (ex 81C, 81A) and Bryan Fernyhough (ex 82C) in charge.
This brought back a lot of memories for us ex (old!) footplate men. We talked about locomotives and the jobs we did, he was quite knowledgeable on all subjects.
I met him again some years later at Bristol. He was travelling home we had a quick chat and a handshake.
