HOLIDAY accommodation firm Railholiday in St Germans, Cornwall, will be celebrating the completion of their latest carriage restoration by holding an open day on Friday, March 16.
The newest addition to the Railholiday portfolio is a GWR brake third from 1896, complete with ducket windows and lots of original features.
Three years in the works, the carriage has been named Millpool after the place it was discovered.

Railholiday’s Lizzy Stroud said: “We wanted to create a special space that could be enjoyed by everyone, so have adapted Millpool for optimum accessibility. This has created an open plan design that is airy and light. Although Millpool doesn’t have the trackside views of the Travelling Post Office or the Old Luggage Van, it has a terrace with fine vistas of the rolling Cornish countryside.”
Railholiday’s open day will run from 10.45am to 3pm. Refreshments will be available and there will be the opportunity to look at most of the carriages on the St Germans’ site, both restored and unrestored. These include a GWR slip coach, a Travelling Post Office (as featured on Michael Portillo’s Great British Railway Journeys) and a royal saloon built by GWR for Queen Victoria, which is awaiting restoration. Entry is free and all are welcome.
Visitors are requested to arrive by train if at all possible, as car parking is very limited.
