Garden shed collection lights up Norfolk auction

A shedful of railway memories went under the hammer at the sale of a collection amassed by a career railwayman during his five decades of service on the Ipswich-Lowestoft line.

Peter Punchard joined BR in 1954 as a porter at Brampton, became a signalman in 1961 based at nearby Halesworth, and carried out various other roles before retiring in 2003.

Peter’s great-grandfather, who had worked on the construction of the 3ft gauge Southwold Railway that terminated at Halesworth, started the collection, and after Peter inherited it he expanded it with mainly GER and LNER memorabilia, until literally filling his garden shed.

Peter died in 2016, and his collection of nearly 450 items was sold on January 5 by auctioneer T W Gaze of Diss, Norfolk, with the hammer being wielded by Gaze valuer Dan Woods, himself a volunteer driver at Bressingham Steam Museum.
