A ‘lost’ tube station where Winston Churchill may have made key decisions during the blitz is one of the centrepieces of a new series of Hidden London tours.

Visitors are being invited to take light refreshments at the five-star Athenaeum Hotel in Mayfair’s Down Street – before crossing the road to tour the long-abandoned Underground station opposite.
Down Street was opened in 1907 by the Great Northern, Piccadilly & Brompton Railway, and in its final years was served by the Piccadilly line.

However, patronage was poor because of its proximity to Green Park and Hyde Park Corner stations, and also because the affluent residents of the area had transport of their own. Often it was missed out by passing trains.
