The Watercress Line runs for 10 miles between Alton and Alresford in Hampshire on a line that once linked up the London & South Western Railway’s lines at Alton and Winchester.
The route survived the Beeching Axe of 1963 but was closed by British Railways in February 1973. Two years later, the section that makes up what you can see today was bought by preservationists and reconstruction commenced in stages, the first stretch of line between Alresford and Ropley reopening on April 30, 1977.
To celebrate the 45th anniversary of that first opening last year, the award-winning Mid Hants Film Crew’s second part of its ‘In Their Words’ documentary series details some of the challenges faced and characters met that shaped the railway, and the serious concerns that came with the Covid 19 pandemic lockdowns.
