RICHARD Preston has been welcomed as the new chairman of the Great Western Society.
At its board meeting on January 27, he replaced Richard Croucher, who retired as chairman and a director after 18 years.
Richard Preston has been active in railway preservation since 1968 – both at Didcot Railway Centre, where he was locomotive manager twice and a trustee once – and on the main line, where he was engineer for a main line registered locomotive.

He is also a director of Great Western Preservations (the holding company for the GWS fleet of locomotives and rolling stock) and manager of the non-operational locomotive group, which was set up with the aim of improving conservation and presentation of static engines at Didcot.
