Second Duchess joins line-up at Dreweatts’ transport sale

A second LMS Duchess has joined the ranks of the Dreweatts’ Transport Sale of live steam models on March 12. It is No. 6231 Duchess of Atholl, built in 5in gauge by gold medal-winning model engineer John Richardson of Halifax using works’ drawings and is in the livery the Pacific carried when it emerged from Crewe in June 1938.

The late Lord Braybrooke is in his element as he takes visitors round his Audley End Miniature Railway in Essex at the controls of 10¼in gauge LNER Class C1 Ivatt Atlantic 4-4-2 No. 4433, one of nine models from his collection that will be going under the hammer at a Dreweatts’ transport sale in Newbury on March 12. It joins a 7¼in gauge No. 6230 Duchess of Buccleuch which, as reported in last month’s issue, is estimated to go under the hammer for up to £150,000.

This model is 9ft 5in long and took the late Harry Powell, a former master coppersmith and chief of the copper shop at Crewe works, 10 years to build.
