Heading the line-up were nameplates from two Southern Railway Pacifics – Cunard White Star from Merchant Navy No. 35004 (£42,000) and Dorchester with the county town’s coat-of-arms from West Country No. 34042 (£38,000).
Just two weeks after GW Railwayana achieved a world record £64,500 for a nameplate from LNER No. 60103 Flying Scotsman, as reported in last month’s issue, the tills were also ringing at Great Central’s December 1 sale at Stoneleigh Park, with the top five realisations achieving a combined £142,200 before the addition of buyer’s premium.
This pair was way ahead of third-placed Windward Islands (£17,200) from No. 45637, the LMS Jubilee that was involved in the tragic Harrow & Wealdstone station crash in October 1952.

Behind came three plates that each achieved £15,000, from GWR Star class No. 4061 Glastonbury Abbey, LMS Royal Scot No. 46147 The Northamptonshire Regiment with badge, and LNER A4 No. 60003 Andrew K. McCosh.
Two Standard locomotive nameplates were next up, these being an aluminium The Territorial Army 1908-1958 (Britannia No. 70048 – £7400) and Etarre (Class 5MT No. 73114 – £6200), while the pursuing pack consisted of Sir Dinadan from SR King Arthur No. 30795 at £5400, Ickenham Hall from GWR No. 5944 which went for £4300, and Charles J Hambro from another GWR representative, Saint class No. 2978 (£3600). A non-seller under the hammer was Walsingham from LNER B17 No. 61602, but this went to a new home at full-time for £4000.
