TORNADO builder The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust is to construct a Gresley V4 as its third all-new engine project.
Work on the 2-6-2 mixed-traffic engine – Gresley’s last design before he died in 1941 – will begin in the next 12 months, long before the rapidly advancing construction of P2 2-8-2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales is complete.
Afterwards, the trust aims to build a Gresley V3 2-6-2T, it was announced at a convention in Darlington on October 1.

Chairman Mark Allatt said: “The Trust’s exciting plans for its own state-of-the-art train, 90mph operation for Tornado, a new main line connected base in Darlington and further new-build LNER steam locomotives demonstrate that after more than 25 years of innovation, The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust remains at the forefront of the railway heritage movement.”
