In the days after Christmas, Gareth Evans, Heritage Railway magazine deputy editor returned ‘home’ to his native Mid Wales.
While there, he enjoyed the traditional Evans family post-Christmas trip on the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways (Ff&WHR).
The 13.5-mile (21.7km) 2ft gauge line runs through the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales, between the pleasant coastal resort of Porthmadog and the mountainous slate quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

On December 28, 2018, the train was double-headed by Hunslet 2-4-0STT Blanche and Single Fairlie 0-4-4T Taliesin. This clip shows the engines running round the train at Blaenau Ffestiniog. The station also serves as an interchange with Transport for Wales’ Conwy Valley Line services to Llandudno, part of the National Network.
After his trip, Gareth and his family enjoyed their lunch in the rateable Ff&WHR-owned Spooner’s bar and restaurant at Porthmadog Harbour Station.
