I enjoyed reading the article on the humble 4F in issue 217 and especially liked the picture of No. 44405 displaying the W1 ‘target’ as one of the works shunters in 1966.
This took me right back to a visit to Crewe Works on November 8, 1964 with the Locomotive Club of Great Britain, hauled by No. 70020 Mercury from Euston, since one of the 4F works shunters at that time was No. 44405 (W13 then), the others being No. 44450 (W1) and No. 44373 (W12). I have photos of all three looking to be in excellent condition.
Also present that day, waiting to go into the works, was the first
‘Black Five’ No. 45000, with all its various parts neatly labelled, as shown in the other photo.
