US ‘Big Boy’ overhaul started by Union Pacific

Following the completion of the overhaul of Union Pacific 4-8-4 Northern No. 844, the railroad is now starting work on the restoration of four-cylinder articulated 4-8-8-4 ‘Big Boy’ No. 4014.

In late 2012, Union Pacific announced that it was interested in obtaining a ‘Big Boy’ and restoring it to operating condition, and on July 23 the following year, revealed that it had reacquired No. 4014 from the Southern California chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in Pomona for that purpose.

It had been donated to that society in December 1961 after
having been retired from service on July 21, 1959.
