In just two months Weardale Railway supporters raised £54,000 to buy a DMU from the Bodmin & Wenford Railway.
The Derby, 1960-built Class 108 unit will allow the heritage line to carry twice as many passengers, as it extends back into Bishop Auckland after an absence of several years.
The DMU can accommodate 120 people, double the capacity of the Class 122 railcar currently in service on the line. The unit was conveyed by road from Cornwall to Weardale in late March.

Weardale Railway Trust financial director Peter Baker said: “We decided that we would like to own our own train so that we can run our heritage services with reliability and perhaps expand in the future as well.
“We were very lucky that our members responded to our request for funds to buy this.”
