After an absence of more than two years, on-train dining is back at the Severn Valley Railway.

After an absence of more than two years, on-train dining is back at the Severn Valley Railway, with a bigger-than-ever choice of services and a first-class menu created by the railway’s in-house executive head chef.

Starting tomorrow (August 3), and departing from Kidderminster station on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday lunchtimes, the dining services offer the perfect experience for a celebration with friends, a romantic date or an opportunity for foodies to sample the very best cuisine, whilst travelling in style through stunning Worcestershire and Shropshire countryside.

“I’ve focused the three-course menu very much on local and regional produce,” explained Lucy Kelly, the SVR’s executive head chef. “Each dish is full of exciting and complimentary flavours, as well as being a treat for the eyes as it’s served to your table. I’m proud to present this handcrafted menu and to be showcasing it in such a unique setting on the railway.”

The railway operated a preview dining service last week, and has received extremely positive feedback from passengers. One TripAdvisor reviewer said: “Wow, just blown away by the presentation and taste sensation…a must repeat experience.”

Diners will be served with a starter and main course as they travel the 16-mile route from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth. There’s a short stopover at the SVR’s northernmost heritage station, with time to explore the gift shop or visit the Railwayman’s Arms. Then it’s back on board the luxuriously appointed 1930s dining carriage for desserts and coffee during the return journey.

“Our catering team has worked extremely hard to get things just right for the return of our on-train dining experiences,” said Michael Dunn, head of commercial and visitor experience. “We wanted to make sure everything was just right, and that we’re giving our diners the very highest standards of cuisine and service, along with a luxury heritage experience they’ll treasure.”

As well as its lunchtime dining services, the SVR offers on-train afternoon teas that promise a vintage theme with a modern twist. Comprising savoury bites, sandwiches, scones and traditional cakes, afternoon teas are served on board the SVR’s beautifully-appointed teak dining carriage.
