The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) is appealing for support to help complete the engine shed for its new 5ins gauge Wansford Miniature Railway. Expected to open during the 2021 season, the line will connect the play area with the NVR’s workshop, providing a welcome additional attraction on site as well as a training aid.
Trackwork is in place on the miniature railway and rolling stock is to hand, with further additions in the pipeline.
“To help us raise the final £2000 required to wooden clad our metal container to protect and secure it and create a traditional looking locomotive shed, we’re running a prize draw for an experience money cannot buy – to be a railwayman for a day,” said Paul Roe, NVR locomotive department manager.

“The winner will spend a day on the NVR, including the opportunity to enjoy breakfast cooked on the shovel with our locomotive crew; a guided tour of the locomotive sheds and Wansford signalbox; a 15 mile footplate ride; a tour of the miniature railway; a round trip in the carriages; and a souvenir certificate to remember the day.”
To enter, give a contribution of £10 or more at nvr.org.uk/article.php/119/wansford-miniature-railway – the draw will take place on March 31. The winner, who must be 18 years of age or over, will be contacted and a date arranged, subject to Covid-19 conditions.
On a separate note, the Nene Valley Railway has announced it plans to reopen on May 24, if Covid-19 restrictions permit. Tickets will go on sale shortly at https://nvr.org.uk/
