Toddington’s Merchant Navy preparing for Southern comeback

GLOUCESTERSHIRE Warwickshire Railway-based Bulleid Merchant Navy Pacific No. 35006 Peninsular & Oriental S. N. Co. is to make its first visit to Southern Railway territory since its restoration.

The 1941-built locomotive is one of four Bulleid Pacifics that will star at the Mid Hants Railway’s July 1-2 and 7-9 gala in order to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of Southern steam.

On the Watercress Line it will run alongside Battle of Britain 4-6-2 No. 34053 Sir Keith Park from the Severn Valley Railway, Jeremy Hosking’s No. 34052 Lord Dowding aka 34046 Braunton and the recently-restored No. 34081
92 Squadron from the Nene
Valley Railway.

Built at Eastleigh and given the Southern Railway number 21C6, No. 35006 was allocated to Salisbury shed, where it remained based throughout its working life

It was withdrawn in August 1964, with a final mileage of 1,134,319 and was sent to
Barry scrapyard.
